May is a full month of musical activities – please don’t miss out!

Meetings-wise, our monthly FOM meeting will be Tuesday, May 11. This is a very important meeting as a new slate of officers will be nominated for next year. This is your opportunity to get involved or have your voice be heard. Half of our current board parents are parents of graduating seniors so this is your chance to make a difference. Remember, decisions are made by those who show up – so show up!

Monetarily, this is a big month for our fundraisers. Our Spring Tag Days are May 7-8-9. Students who do 2 Tag Days during the year – 2 in Winter, 2 in Spring, or 1 in Winter and 1 in Spring – may attend the end of year dinner banquet FREE of charge (a savings of $38!). Our Spring Clothing Drive is May 8 in front of the high school; please donate any used clothing, shoes, accessories or soft household items.

The monies we raise also go to providing scholarships to graduating seniors. The more we raise, the more generous we can be, and with the cost of college these days, every little bit helps!

Musically, there will be performances by the Orchestra & Wind Ensemble on the 13th; the Symphonic Band & Jazz Band on the 24th and the Marching Band & Color Guard on the 31st.

Bravo to all of our award-winning music students who performed so brilliantly in the Pit Orchestra as part of this year’s musical, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. The lively shows featured two dozen musical selections and the students received well-deserved standing ovations.

The April meeting was early this month due to the spring break and many people missed the date! Sorry!Next month’s Friends of Music meeting will be May 11th. This will be one of the most important meetings of the year, as we discuss changes to the organization and the nominations and selections of new board members for next year. As many of our current board members and key committee people are parents of seniors, we have several key positions opening up, which present exciting opportunities for new people to get involved and for new voices to be heard!

We CAN play an active role in the lives of our children. We need EVERYONE to pitch in where they can so the organization can continue to move forward.

Friends of Music promotes the entire Instrumental Music program, which includes the Marching Band & Color Guard, Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Orchestra, and Jazz Band.

Spring TAG DAYS and our Spring clothing drive is next month, so start saving used clothing, shoes, accessories, and soft household items.

Thursday, April 29 – After school bake sale, 2:30 p.m.
Friday, May 7-Sunday, May 9 – TAG DAYS
Saturday, May 8 – Clothing Drive

Our award-winning music students will be performing on the big stage again this month – this time in the high school auditorium – during this year’s school musical, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” based on the popular Steve Martin-Michael Caine movie.

The high school’s annual production has regularly won or been nominated for Best Play and Best Orchestra in the state! Whether you’ve come year after year, or if this is your first time, make plans now for a great night out. Performances are Thursday, March 11 at 8:00 p.m., Friday, March 12 at 8:00 p.m., Saturday, March 23 at 8:00 p.m., and Sunday, March 14 at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $10-$15-$20 and are on sale now in the high school.

Plus you get to see Maestro Kafer in a tuxedo; that alone is worth the price of admission!

The department’s trip to Broadway this year is right after Spring Break on April 20. The students will get to enjoy one of the most outstanding musicals of all time – West Side Story. Look for notices from your child if you owe any balances to Mr. Kafer.

No monthly meeting this month (we’ll all probably still be shoveling!) but please start giving thought to getting involved in Friends of Music for next year! Most of our board is comprised of senior parents and we’re looking for new leadership as well as new faces just to help out and support our kids. You CAN make a difference.
