February 2010

Marching Band season and the holidays may be over (OK, Band season never really ends) but the Instrumental Music Program plays on.

Now is a great time for ALL music and marching band parents to stay in tune with what their children are learning in school. This month’s Friends of Music meeting will provide you with the opportunity to learn what your children are learning in the classroom as well as bring you up to date on upcoming activities, such as:

The Musical --- Tickets are on sale now for this year’s musical, “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels,” based on the popular Steve Martin-Michael Caine movie. The high school’s annual production has regularly won or been nominated for Best Play and Best Orchestra in the state! Whether you’ve come year after year, or if this your first time, make plans now for a great night out.

Broadway Show --- The department’s trip to Broadway this year is April 20. The students will get to enjoy one of the most outstanding musicals of all time – West Side Story.

The Instrumental Music Program is one of the finest of its kind, offering students a variety of opportunities to study and perform music. Come and learn about the many exciting programs we have to offer from Mr. Kafer and Ms. Lucas. We hope to see many new faces in 2010.

January 2010

Happy New Year! A new decade is here and we look forward to having many new parents join the Friends of Music family and support our children and the entire Instrumental Music Program here at Fair Lawn High School.

Our Winter Tag Days last month were a great success as we raised nearly $2,000 to benefit our children and the music program. The monies raised will go towards meeting the needs of the music program as well as to provide scholarships for college-bound graduating seniors. It was also a great opportunity for our children to learn community service and upon volunteering for two shifts in either the Winter or Spring, they’ll be able to attend the end of year dinner banquet for free!

Congratulations to all of the students in the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, String Orchestra, and Jazz Ensemble, Mr. Kafer and Ms. Lucas, for another successful and highly enjoyable Winter Concert.

We urge ALL music and marching band parents to make joining Friends of Music one of their New Year’s resolutions – but this is one we want you to stick with! After all, it’s all about the children!  No meeting this month. Our next meeting is Tuesday, February 9th

7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14 – After school bake sale, 2:30 p.m.

December 2009 – HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Winter Tag Days – our biggest fundraiser of all –are fast approaching. Tag Days are when students from all of the various the Instrumental Music programs are asked to volunteer and help collect donations from the community. Students do this in pairs, usually signing up with a fellow music student or friend from band, volunteering for two hour shifts under adult supervision, in designated locations around town (for example, ShopRite, Pathmark, CVS, Dunkin’ Donuts, etc).

Students may sign up for two, 2-hour shifts in the Winter or do one 2-hour shift in the Winter and one 2-hour shift in the Spring. Students who complete two shifts during the school year may attend the Instrumental Music program’s annual End of Year Dinner Banquet at the Venetian free of charge.

This year’s Winter Tag Days are Friday, December 4 through Sunday Dec. 6. Sign up forms have been distributed or you can contact Robin Leavy at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for additional forms and information.

Don’t miss out! The more people involved the more we raise for EVERY student’s benefit!

Up next musically, the annual Winter Concert is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 15. FOM will have a concession table that night to help raise funds for the music program. It’s a great evening to enjoy wonderful performances by our kids and really get into the holiday mood!
